Aston Villa vs Chelsea Might 23, 2021 Match Preview and Stats

Chelsea face Aston Villa in the final Premier League game of the season on Sunday afternoon to secure top four status.

The Blues are currently in third place in the top table, one point above Liverpool and Leicester who are fourth and fifth respectively.

A win for Thomas Tuchel’s men would guarantee their place in next season’s Champions League and confirm the remarkable work the former Paris Saint-Germain boss has done since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Tuesday night’s dramatic 2-1 win against the Foxes put Chelsea in the driver’s seat for that final day’s top four showdown and also took revenge on Brendan Rodgers’ men for their final FA Cup defeat.

However, the work of the Capital Club is not done yet. Three points are likely to be needed over the weekend to prevent Jurgen Klopp and Leicester’s men from skipping Chelsea in the table, which means tight, tense 90 minutes.

A clean sheet could be vital to the West London team’s chances on Sunday and Edouard Mendy should therefore keep his place between the sticks.

At the signing in the summer, the experienced trio of Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rüdiger should be in front of him, with Andreas Christensen still suffering from a small thigh problem.

England internationals Reece James and Ben Chilwell will keep their starting XI after solid midweek performances but an injury to N’Golo Kante will force Tuchel to make a change in Chelsea’s engine room.

The French international was replaced after just 32 minutes against Leicester due to a muscle complaint and is expected to be out against Villa as he aims to recover in time for the Champions League final on May 29th.

Mateo Kovacic was Kant’s successor on Tuesday evening and appeared for the first time after a five-time injury break. He should be partner Jorginho in the middle of the field as the duo should try to stabilize and control Chelsea’s game.

Tuchel has a variety of options in the front positions but an attacking trident from Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner wreaked havoc last time out and is hoping to keep Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech on the bench.
