Bruce will get his reply over potential Toon deal in summer time

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has shared his view that Newcastle United is the “right place” for Joe Willock to develop but dealt a blow to the Magpies as they tried to keep the midfielder for the next season.

Willock has been impressed since he was loaned to the Magpies in January and scored four goals. Steve Bruce has made no secret of his desire to get a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

However, it seems that Arteta wants to give the 21-year-old a chance this summer and although he has admitted the Toon was the right place for Willock, he wants to give the attacker a chance next season.

“He has a chance,” Arteta replied when asked if Willock would get a chance to prove himself in the preseason.

“He’s a player we really like. He’ll come back here at the end of the season and then we’ll make another decision on what’s best to move forward.”

In the past four weeks, Willock has scored three crucial goals that have been instrumental in widening the points gap between Fulham and Newcastle in the battle for the safety of the Premier League.

“No,” Arteta said when asked if he was surprised by Willock’s success so far at Newcastle, “because he has some great qualities, some unique qualities to play in this position.”

“He’s a real threat in the opponent’s box, physically he can do anything you ask and has the right mentality, is technically good and he’s English.”
