European Golden Shoe 2020/21: Messi matches Ronaldo

Lionel Messi scored his 19th goal of the season in La Liga at the weekend when Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-0.

The Argentine is currently in a great hunt for goals and has now scored the same number of league goals as his perennial rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who also scored at the weekend as Juventus only drew 1-1 with Verona.

The two megastars continue to be a ray of hope in bleak campaigns for Barcelona and Juventus.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Andre Silva came to the famous two with 19 goals and 38 points in the race for the European Golden Shoe. He scored but was on the losing side after Werder Bremen beat Frankfurt 2-1.

Kylian Mbappe is only one goal behind those three as he scored two goals for PSG at the weekend and scored 18 points for the season, as did Inter’s Romelu Lukaku who scored again.

Paul Onuachu from Genk and Georgios Giakoumakis from Venlo continue to bet on the goals to reach the ranking.

Robert Lewandowski of course scored again for Bayern and now has 28 goals and 56 points for the season.

Can it be stopped?

As a reminder, the five elite leagues – Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 – all have a weight of 2, which means that a player will receive two points for every goal they score in these competitions .

For the leagues that rank six to 30 in the UEFA coefficient ranking, the goals scored are weighted with 1.5, and goals scored in a league outside the top 30 are weighted with 1.

Ciro Immobile won the 2019/20 European Golden Boot and scored 36 goals for Lazio in a great Serie A season.
