Ex-Tottenham star hits out at Arsenal playmaker over his lack of want
Former Tottenham Hotspur star Gary Stevens has claimed Martin Odegaard has no desire to become a truly top notch player.
Odegaard was loaned to Arsenal by Real Madrid in January but hasn’t had much of an impact with the club yet.
Since joining the Gunners, he has not been able to register a goal or an assist in eight appearances in all competitions.
In an interview with Stadium Astro, Stevens asked if the Norwegian playmaker has the appetite to play in the major leagues.
“When he was 16, almost every club in the world of football wanted him,” said Stevens. “He went to Real Madrid and has been there for six years, but he hasn’t played too many games.
“He’s got a great deal and I don’t know if he’s ready to take himself out.
“They know the best players in the world, when they get near the top they’re still grafting – they’re still doing the hard yards and wanting to improve.
“When I’ve seen him play for Arsenal I think he’s neat and tidy – technically he’s really good, but does he go to the little extra of making you win the game or making sure you don’t get beaten?
“That’s just the one question mark I have against him because he technically saw it.”
Odegaard hasn’t done much to suggest he is a player Arsenal should sign on a permanent basis this summer.
Stevens is spot on when he says the Norwegian is neat and tidy but he lacks an end product and his labor rate is questionable.
If Arsenal are serious about returning to the top of the Premier League they need players willing to go the extra mile.
From today’s perspective, Odegaard will need to be more productive if he is to stay with Arsenal beyond the end of the season.
