Manchester United put together €45m for Juventus defender as Varane backup
Manchester United seek a partner in crime for Harry Maguire as they try to rebuild Solskjær under Ole Gunnar. They have already secured Jadon Sancho’s signing after following him for more than two years.
However, their team is far from complete as they try to challenge players like Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. A crucial piece for this puzzle is a partner with Harry Maguire. Now the Red Devils are planning a raid Juventus to bring in a new defender.
Manchester United and Varane transfer saga
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, quoted by sports witnesses, the Red Devils are ready to pay $ 45 million for Mehri Demiral. While they are ready to pay that money for the Turkey international, their main target is Raphaël Varane. Manchester United has also personally reached an agreement with the French international.
However, they are well aware that it will be difficult to convince Real Madrid to sell him this summer. Los Blancos are set to play hardball against Varane. The former Lens defender has just one year left from his current contract with the Spanish giant. Real Madrid want Manchester United to pay high fees for him, which the Red Devils don’t want to do.
Los Blancos are trying to delay Varane’s possible move to Old Trafford as they want him to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, there are also fears that the Frenchman could use the Red Devils to get a better deal from Real Madrid.
Juventus defender alternative for Manchester United
The Red Devils know they may not be able to sign Varane this summer. Therefore, they are also looking for other alternatives. Atalanta’s Cristian Romero is also a potential target for the club. It is considered an alternative to Varane.
However, the giants of the Premier League did not enter into talks with him as he was on national service with Argentina. He was also very impressive in Argentina’s Copa America triumph as he showed a solid defensive performance.
However, the problem for Ole Gunnar Solksjear’s side would be to reach an agreement with Atalanta on fees. Romero is currently in Serie A and Atalanta is also likely to charge a hefty fee to sell him this summer. This brought the Red Devils back to first place.
Why does Manchester United want Demiral?
Due to the high fee demands for Varane and Romero, the Red Devils have focused on Demiral. The Turkish international came to the club from Sassuolo in 2019 for 18 million euros. He was hired with the idea of working with Matthijs de Ligt on a long-term basis.
Juventus saw him and De Ligt as long-term successors to Bonucci and Chiellini. However, a long-term injury had ruined his progress. That speaks volumes about how high he’s rated in the Italian league. No wonder then that Manchester United want to bring him to Old Trafford.
Though the Red Devils may overpay for him. According to Transfermarkt, it is estimated at around $ 31 million. But Manchester United are ready to spend $ 45 million, which is a difference of $ 14 million. If they can sign him, Demiral will have plenty of time to prove his worth since he’s only 23 years old.

Manchester United fans would appreciate this transfer news. But they would love to see Varane in the red jersey anyway. Demiral has yet to prove himself in the Italian league so it would be a gamble to spend so much money on him that could sign Varane from Real Madrid.
