When a loss to local rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday night wasn’t enough for Liverpool, some of the Red’s biggest and most beloved stars sparked controversy with their reaction.

After the Reds lost 2-0, their first Premier League loss to the Toffees at Anfield since 1999, Alisson showed the goalkeeper’s union as he hugged Jordan Pickford in full.

Alisson’s actions were certainly more direct than the love Roberto Firmino showed for an Everton colleague in the Liverpool defeat. Both incidents sparked some Red Anger supporters.

Even Jürgen Klopp seemed unimpressed and amused by Alisson’s decision. The German had a shocked expression on his face when he looked clearly in the direction of the goalkeeper pair.

Alisson’s decision to hug and chat to Pickford full-time would be controversial after losing to Liverpool’s fiery local rivals, but there is of course other bad blood between Pickford and the Reds.

Pickford left Virgil van Dijk in October with a long-term knee injury and a reckless challenge. It will be a miracle when the Reds’ world-class defender returns after the blow this season.

With this in mind, Alisson’s decision was all the more surprising. From a neutral standpoint, it’s nice to see that both players have made massive mistakes this season. This shows that the Goalkeeper’s Union is a real thing and a bond that can even replace club rivalries.
