Report: PAOK left-back Dimitris Giannoulis set to be supplied to Newcastle United, Jetro Willems determined to return
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh says Eintracht Frankfurt left-back Jetro Willems is keen to return to Newcastle United before next month’s winter transfer window, while PAOK left-back Dimitris Giannoulis is slated to be offered again.
Newcastle contacted PAOK and the player’s representatives during the summer transfer window but it is not certain that an official bid has been made.
The £ 5million Greek international has also been offered Watford and Marseille and while Newcastle is in the market for a new left-back, head coach Steve Bruce isn’t as confident as his recruiting team is signing him.
The Magpies signed Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis for £ 15m during the summer transfer window but they want quality depth in the position amid Paul Dummett’s injury problems.
The 29-year-old was excluded from the Premier League squad in Newcastle in the second half of last season with a hamstring injury and Bruce is keen to find a replacement.
Agents have been informed that the club are planning to add another left-back in January and more options are sure to emerge in the coming weeks.
Giannoulis won the Super League and Greek Cup with PAOK in 2018/19 and the 25-year-old should have no problem getting to the ground at St. James’ Park and the English top division given his speed and attack Ability.
However, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will chase after the Greece international but a move for Willems could appeal to Bruce.
The Dutchman’s loan spell with the Magpies last season was cut short in January due to an anterior cruciate ligament, but he has always publicly expressed his desire to return to SJP.
Willems could be available for a small fee next month and if added to his defense it could help build his fortune in the second half of 2020-21.
The 26-year-old scored twice and twice assisted in 19 league games for Newcastle. He can definitely give Lewis a run for his money.
