Tottenham Hotspur have contacted the representatives of Athletic Bilbao supervisor Marcelino
According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is working to make a shortlist to succeed Jose Mourinho before interviewing three or four and choosing the right one.
The representatives of Athletic Bilbao’s manager Marcelino have been contacted and while the 55-year-old’s contract expires in 2022 there are clauses in the contract that mean he wouldn’t be too expensive to sign this summer.
The Guardian reported that Spurs boss Levy would like an attacking manager to replace the laid-off Portuguese and is keen to ensure that the eventual replacement has a modern perspective and strong references in developing young players.
Wanting someone similar to Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham started making calls from agents telling them the profile of a potential manager after losing to Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb.
Marcelino is currently one of the top managers in La Liga and he is in demand for his track record of youth development and impressive style of play.
The Spaniard, who was an attacking midfielder during his playing days, has headed nine different clubs in his country, with Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia having their last three jobs before the current one.
Marcelino won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 2018-19 and recently led Bilbao to the finals of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 editions, losing both.
However, it led them to a 3-2 win over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in January.
Spurs’ goal was named the league’s best coach in 2017/18 and it is a tremendous accomplishment to help Valencia finish fourth in a row in his two years with the club.
While Levy would like to have RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann as Tottenham’s next boss, Bayern Munich is the favorite in the race for the 33-year-old should he find a way to leave his current employer this summer.
North Londoners may have to settle for someone like Marcelino, although he’s not a big name outside of Spain, and he could be the man to finally bring them much-needed success.
In other news, the Celtic management goal has responded superbly to ties to the Tottenham job.
